We are officially kicking off “Operation Overseas Mardi Gras 2010”. This will be our third year in a row and we hope to double what we did last year! Our goal is 1,500 care packages stuffed full of Mardi Gras cheer. These packages will go to our deployed units from Louisiana, stationed in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Soldiers’ Angels is once again joining World T.E.A.M. Sports by providing volunteers and support during the ride, including the banners. To thank participating wounded veterans for their service and celebrate the way they are overcoming their injuries, homemade banners expressing gratitude, celebration and appreciation are needed to hang along the riders' path.

The U.S. Military provides what can only be described as extraordinary care to our wounded military personnel. No expense is spared to treat a wounded serviceman or women. Soldiers' Angels has, however, put together a backpack which can be given to each wounded soldier as they arrive at the combat support hospitals in Iraq and Afghanistan.

I got the idea for PTSD Awareness Day after learning of the efforts of North Dakota National Guardsmen to draw attention to PTSD and pay tribute to Staff Sgt. Joe Biel, a friend and member of the 164th Engineer Combat Battalion. Biel suffered from PTSD and took his life in April 2007 after returning to North Dakota following his second tour in Iraq.

On Friday morning (9/10/10), Fred J. Brehony answered the call to duty as he had so many times before. He pulled on a leather vest covered with patches noting his military service, climbed aboard his motorcycle and rode off to honor a fallen Vietnam veteran at Willamette National Cemetery. He never made it. Brehony, 67, a member of the Patriot Guard Riders, was killed in a collision on his way to the cemetery.
